Study Abroad Programs
CEMPROC is dedicated to educating and raising awareness among college students with respect to peace, conflict, social justice, leadership, and the like. By designing customized programs that meet the needs of specific college groups, we are able to offer high-quality, hands-on educational opportunities that supplement the academic experience in students' own universities.
Environmental Conflict Study Abroad
We offer a practical, hands-on Environmental Conflict study trip in which students visit Ecuador for 1-3 weeks, hearing from scholars, government policymakers, and practioners in environmental conflict resolution, especially in the context of Ecuadorian rainforest and petroleum disputes. More importantly, students will visit the lush cloud forest and the frigid paramo, or high grassland, investigating for themselves and conversing with the local community in the actual sites of environmental conflicts. These may include the site of an oil spill in a key lake that provides drinking water or the incursion of petroleum companies onto traditional indigenous territories and natural resources, among others.

Comments from participants in past programs include:
"I never realized before how much environmental exploitation goes on, and how this affects conservation--my eyes have been opened. This trip has changed my life! Now I want to go back to the United States and raise awareness about what is happening."
"This trip has been fantastic. CEMPROC is a great organization!"

International Conflict Resolution Study Abroad
In partnership with the University of Georgia School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA), CEMPROC is initiating an International Conflict Resolution Study Abroad Program for Maymester 2007. Join us for this brand new program nestled in the beautiful Andes Mountains of Quito, Ecuador, in which you will examine international conflict from theoretical and practical perspectives, learning the root causes of conflict and potential tools for engaging in effective peacemaking. You will explore theories of war, violence, peace, justice, ethnic strife, conflict over natural resources, ethics in peacemaking, and different approaches to resolution. Building on this theoretical base, you will be exposed to techniques, tools, and paradigms for addressing, resolving, and transforming conflict through negotiation, mediation, sustained dialogue, and other methodologies, as well as in-depth treatment of special topics and case studies.
You will have the opportunity to chat with phenomenal guest speakers who are diplomats, NGO practitioners, decision makers, and scholars dealing with these topics in the Latin American context.
You will apply what you learn in practical, hands-on class activities such as case studies, conflict simulations, and site visits to areas where political, environmental, or other conflicts have occurred. The program will be given in English. Come to Ecuador and make the world your classroom!
